But what I actually remembered was the look of relief on their face when they knew the problem was solved. Going out of your way for a guest doesn't require anything elaborate. It usually means following through on their actual problem rather than the narrow part of it that's technically your job.

A small friction that repeated many times a day became a solved problem. Operational improvements in retail are often hiding in the small things that cause repeated friction. We had a different offer that was slightly less beneficial but still meaningful. I applied it and explained what I had done. The guest left satisfied. The key was treating the situation as a problem to solve for them, not a policy violation to enforce. Those two framings lead to very different conversations.

Sometimes the most efficient thing is also the most attentive thing, if you look at the whole system rather than the individual steps.
