We reframed the product experience around group running rather than individual performance metrics. The community-facing features we added based on this insight drove significantly higher engagement than the features the data alone would have led us to build. Consumer understanding that stops at behavioral data misses the motivation behind the behavior. The motivation is what tells you what to build.

The resulting product hit the design goals and the business targets. Creative and commercial functions fight when they see each other as constraints rather than context. Getting them to share their reasoning rather than their conclusions usually resolves most of the conflict.

Our team had the option to extend a successful product line with a predictable iteration that would have performed reliably. But I believed the category was ready for something different and that predictable iterations were not going to capture the attention of the consumer group we most wanted to reach. I made the case explicitly and directly: the safe path had a lower floor but also a lower ceiling. The ambitions direction had more risk but was the more interesting business bet. The team agreed to take the ambitious path. The product exceeded expectations. Not every bold bet will. But the argument for bold action shouldn't be that it always works. It should be that the category and the consumer context made it the right call at this moment.

I needed contributions from a creative team whose priorities were set by a different leadership chain. They were supportive of the project but had their own backlog and my request kept getting deprioritized. Rather than escalating, I asked to understand what was creating the bottleneck on their side. It turned out that my requests were coming in with insufficient context, which meant they had to do extra work to understand the brief before they could start. Each back-and-forth added delay. I rebuilt my brief format to include everything they needed to start without a follow-up question. I also offered to attend their brief review session to answer questions in real time rather than async. The projects I submitted under the new format moved through their queue significantly faster. Getting results through teams you don't manage requires understanding what makes their work harder and removing that friction. Asking them to move faster rarely works. Removing the thing slowing them down almost always does.

I launched a product campaign that I was genuinely proud of. The execution was strong, the creative was well-received internally, and I had high confidence in the result. The consumer response was underwhelming. I had filtered my judgment through the lens of the consumers I had spent the most time with, who were enthusiasts, and assumed the resonance would translate more broadly. I changed how I run validation after that. Before finalizing any significant creative direction, I now specifically test with the broadest target segment, not just the most accessible or vocal one. The enthusiast perspective is valuable but it is not representative. Failures that happen in spite of genuine effort and good execution are the most useful ones. They tell you something about your framework that comfort-zone failures don't.

I was evaluating two supply chain options for a product. One was faster to produce and lower cost. The other used materials that met our sustainability standards but came at a higher unit cost and longer lead time. I ran a full analysis of both options including consumer research on the target segment's sensitivity to sustainability claims. The research showed that for this particular product and consumer, the sustainability story was a genuine purchase driver, not just a table stake. The business case for the more sustainable option was real when you factored in the consumer value, not just the unit cost. We went with the sustainable option and the product's positioning around materials became one of its most successful marketing angles. Sustainability and business performance are often presented as trade-offs. They sometimes are. But the framing too often skips the step of asking whether the sustainability story has economic value with the consumer. When it does, the trade-off framing is wrong.

Give an example of a time you navigated a conflict between competing internal priorities.

Accepted Answer

Two senior leaders on my project had genuinely different visions for where to focus resources in the next product cycle. Both had legitimate reasoning and both were invested. The disagreement was slowing down planning. I didn't try to resolve the conflict directly by picking a side. Instead, I proposed that we define the success criteria for the cycle first and then evaluate each direction against those criteria. Both leaders agreed to that framing. Once we had agreed on success criteria, the disagreement narrowed considerably. Most of the conflict was about emphasis, not about fundamentally incompatible directions. We found a path that weighted both priorities in a way both leaders could support. Disagreements about direction are often easier to resolve when you start from shared goals rather than competing proposals. The common ground is usually there - it just needs to be made explicit before the proposals come out.
