We were resizing to multiple dimensions sequentially, applying filters in a chain, and running format conversions one at a time. All of this could be parallelized. I rebuilt the processing step to run all independent operations in parallel and moved to a worker pool model for concurrent jobs. Average processing time dropped from 5.8 seconds to 0.9 seconds. After removing a redundant checksum computation and upgrading our image library to a version with better SIMD support, we reached 1.8 seconds. Profiling before optimizing is not optional.
